How to Play Pokemon TCG

Pokemon TCG is a two-player card game where you build a team of Pokemon, power them up with Energy cards and take Prize Cards by knocking out your opponent's Pokemon.

Win Goal

Take 6 Prize Cards

Deck Size

Exactly 60 cards

Starting Hand

7 cards

Bench Size

Up to 5 Pokemon

Objective

You usually win by taking all 6 of your Prize Cards after knocking out opposing Pokemon. You can also win if your opponent has no Pokemon in play or cannot draw a card at the start of their turn.

Setup

Shuffle your 60-card deck and draw 7 cards. Put 1 Basic Pokemon face down as your Active Pokemon and place up to 5 Basic Pokemon on your Bench. Set aside 6 Prize Cards, then flip everything face up and begin.

Turn Structure

On your turn you draw 1 card, then you can play Pokemon, attach 1 Energy for the turn, use Trainer cards, evolve Pokemon and retreat if needed. Most attacks happen at the end of your turn, and then play passes to your opponent.

Attacking And Evolving

Pokemon attack by spending the Energy shown on their attacks. As the game goes on, Basic Pokemon can evolve into stronger stages if the card allows it. Managing Energy, timing your evolutions and choosing the right attacker are key parts of the game.

Beginner Tips

Start with a simple deck built around one main attacker and a few support Pokemon. Learn the difference between Pokemon, Energy and Trainer cards, and focus on attaching Energy every turn so your board keeps developing.
